ERINDALE

LOCATED

Erindale runs along Dundas Street West ... the centre of the old village is just to the east of the Credit River valley.

Below Hwy 403, the South & West borders follow the meandering Credit River. The Eastern border traces along Mavis Rd and dips down to end at the QEW.

HISTORY OF ERINDALE

Erindale is named in honour of the birthplace of the first rector of the village:

Reverend James Magrath

... who was from Erin (Ireland).

During the 17th & 18th centuries, Frnch trappers named the river on which Erindale sits as "Riviere du Credit". Aboriginal peoples called it the "trusting river" because the guns, knives & kettles they obtained in exchange for their furs & woven baskets were often bought on credit.

As settlement progressed, the Mississauga Indians sold their land. In the treaty of 1805 signed by Chief Quenippenon the tribe ceded 70,784 acres (286.45 km2). A second sale of 648,000 acres (2,620 km2) followed in 1818.

Settlers

The "Indian Trail" became a military road & was named Dundas Street after the British Secretary-at-War, Henry Dundas. The Credit Village developed along Dundas Street, settled mainly by people from the bustling Town of York (now Toronto.) By 1809 there were 185 settlers in the area. Sawmills and grist mills were built, powered by water diverted from the river. Most of these settlers were United Empire Loyalists from the former Thirteen Colonies to the south or from settlements in Atlantic Canada, especially New Brunswick.

By 1830 the Crown was selling the land in 100- to 200-acre (0.40-0.81 km2) lots and streets were named after prominent people who settled there. Old Country immigrants began arriving, mingling with the United Empire Loyalists and New Brunswickers. There was also a large group of Irish immigrants who arrived from New York City.

Erindale Village

Erindale Village history began in 1822 when a block of land, known as the Racey Tract, was opened for settlement under the direction of Thomas Racey, a crown agent.

In 1825 village lots were auctioned off, with the village first being known as "Toronto", and later as "Credit", "Springfield", and "Springfield-on-the-Credit".

The founding fathers of nearby St. Peter's Anglican Church and the surrounding community are recognized as being:
- General Peter Adamson,
- Doctor Joseph Adamson,
- Alexander Proudfoot,
- Colonel William Thompson,
- Frederick Starr Jarvis, and
- Henry Carpenter
... most of whom are commemorated with street names.

Other prominent early residents included:
- Sir John Beverley Robinson
- Hotel owner "Emerson Taylor"
- Miller "John McGill" and
- Brewer "Samuel Conover"
... amongst many others.

It was not until 1900 that the village of "Erindale" chose its new name, after the estate of Reverend James Magrath.

Erindale served as a stopping place for those travelling between Hamilton and York (Toronto). The village contained the renowned Royal Exchange Hotel, a number of general stores, mills, and churches.

The village began to decline when it was bypassed by the Great Western Railway in 1855.

The Credit Valley Railway arrived in 1879 and built a station nearby, on Erindale Station Road.

In 1919 Erindale suffered a fire, and little of what was lost was rebuilt. Erindale amalgamated with other villages in Toronto Township in 1968 to form the Town of Mississauga.

Erindale is centrally located in Mississauga offering great access to amenities & all that Mississauga has to offer.

Life in Erindale tends to be quiet & tranquil with access to lots of great parks & trails for families ... it's almost like Clarkson-Lorne Park in terms of neighborhood extremes. How do I mean that? Erindale may not offer as many "Luxury Executive Homes" that "Clarkson-Lorne Park" but there are neighborhoods that do attract the "super wealthy with homes along the Credit River.

It is rich in large Parks, City Amenities & boast a Private Golf Course (Credit Valley Golf and Country Club).

There is a bit of a class struggle in Erindale Real Estate. You have pockets of Luxury, Million Dollar Homes & then the classic detached & Semi-Detached Ranch Bungalows plus the 1970's 2-storey homes. There are also the Real Estate pockets of affordable Townhomes & Condo Townhomes scattered throughout.

While Erindale has much to offer, it also has some less desirable housing complexes along the east end of Dundas.

Plus, many homes in Credit Woodlands have been converted to have Basement Apartments adding Rental Income into the neighborhood.
